July Goals + a June Recap

Check out my goals for the month of July and see how I did on my goals for June!

It’s hard to believe that we’re already facing the first Monday of July and Independence Day is tomorrow! This year is flying by–as I’ve mentioned each month when I sit down to write my goals. Even with the days flying by, I feel like I’m ticking a lot of things off my goals list this year. Let’s see how I did in June!
June Goals

ONE // Catch up on housecleaning

Grade: A

Finally being out of school gave me enough time to get my house clean!

TWO // Read two more books

Grade: C

Well, I read one more book. I’m in the middle of the second. Hmm… Wonder if I’ll get through my summer reading list

THREE // Plan the first month of training for the Run Disney Wine & Dine Half Marathon

Grade: A+

I posted my Wine & Dine Half Marathon Training Plan for the first month, and have already planned the first week of August. My schedule will change beginning the second week of August, so moving forward from there will be more of a challenge.

Wine & Dine Half Marathon Training Weeks 1-5

FOUR // Find an eye doctor and schedule an appointment

Grade: A+

Did this! Even ordered contacts and I can SEE again!

FIVE // Eat clean 90% of the time

Grade: A

For being my first month out of school, I did a pretty good job of sticking to my prepped meals and not eating junk all day. I did start tracking my food/macros a couple of weeks in, just to keep a better handle on things.

July Goals

ONE // Stick to my training program

I know I’m probably not going to make every workout I’ve scheduled, but I want to be as committed as I can be. I’m ready, I’m excited, and I can’t wait to check off my first training run (today!). See my plan for the first five weeks of half marathon training!

TWO // Put together my classroom

I can get the keys to my new classroom next week and I want to get all the organizational stuff out of the way early so I’m not scrambling in August.

THREE // Get a BUNCH of future blog posts scheduled

To put it simply, I want to write and schedule as many posts as possible before school starts so I don’t lag on blogging and can spend appropriate time promoting myself and interacting with other bloggers!

Related: Balance.

FOUR // Enjoy vacation!

This probably seems like a goal that could achieve itself, but I wanted to include it anyway. We are going on vacation in the early stages of my half marathon training, so I don’t want to beat myself up for enjoying the time away and taking my mind OFF of running and training.

FIVE // Eat clean 90% of the time

I think this will always be a goal. I tend to go overboard with mindless snacking in the summer, so I need to post it for accountability!

June! I can’t believe it’s June! I’m still clearing out shows on my DVR from late April, so the fact that it really is June just blows my mind. With a new month comes new goals and a reflection of the goals set for the previous month. Let’s get to it!

May Goals

ONE // Run 2x/week and begin to increase my mileage again

Grade: B+

The only week of the month I didn’t run twice was last week. I’m not really sure how I managed that, but I’m darn proud!

I’m up to 59 miles for my #100bySummer goal! Will I make 100 by June 20?! #100bySummer tracker by @amylynnntiu on Instagram

TWO // Leave work most days by 4:15

Grade: A

This was possibly the easiest goal to achieve. In fact, most days I was out the door by 3:45.

THREE // Eat clean 90% of the time

Grade: B+

Last week was rough, but I managed and this week is already off to a better start.

FOUR // Lose 3 pounds

Grade: F

Well… I didn’t gain any weight so that has to count for something, right?

FIVE // Catch up on house cleaning

Grade: F

Fail, fail, fail. FAIL.

June Goals

ONE // Catch up on housecleaning

Because I’m out of school for the summer, my to-do list has suddenly become a mile long. As you can tell from my April goals, I completely neglected my housekeeping. I’m spending this week doing the “big uns” and hope I can just maintain in the weeks to come.

TWO // Read two more books

Remember how in January, I set a goal to read 12 books this year?! Well, I’m failing miserably at that. BUT! I finally made time to read and finished Dark Places by Gillian Flynn (I’m a sucker for suspense thrillers). I immediately downloaded The Husband’s Secret by Liane Moriarty. Have you read that? I’m hoping it’s good!

THREE // Plan the first month of training for the Run Disney Wine & Dine Half Marathon

I already have a pretty good idea of how I expect to plan this, but I want to sit down and put pen to paper and knock it out. The last time I trained I used a Hal Higdon program, but this time I’m thinking of doing a Jeff Galloway plan.

FOUR // Find an eye doctor and schedule an appointment

Like I said, my to-do list has suddenly become a mile long. I also need to get a haircut, organize our closets, declutter (a lot), etc., etc… But I think making sure my eyeballs are in working order is at the top of the list. 🙂

I’ve been wearing my glasses more and more because I feel my contacts becoming less effective.

FIVE // Eat clean 90% of the time

I have a terrible tendency to get chubby during the summer. I let my meal planning/prepping routines fall by the wayside and snack willy nilly on whatever I can get my hands on. This summer, I want to fight that head on!

May Goals + an April Recap

April was a complete whirlwind! Am I the only one? I feel like no sooner did I sit down to write my April goals than the month was over and done with. To be honest, April was the worst month of 2017 so far (for me anyway). Most days I felt completely out of balance and let the stresses of life take over. Realizing that, April wasn’t a successful month for reaching goals. But! I still think there’s value in looking back and learning from the experience.

It’s already May… But this is my favorite meme of all time!

April Goals

ONE // Drink 100 oz. of water daily

Grade: B-

Most days I did pretty well at this, but there’s definitely room for improvement. Weekends are always when I seem to be less hydrated.

TWO // Run 2x/week to keep my running base up between now and half marathon training time

Grade: A-

This I accomplished! Although I didn’t keep up with the mileage per runs that I was hoping for, I still got in regular runs. I will work on keeping my mileage up better in May!

THREE // Track meals in MyFitnessPal at least four days a week

Grade: F

I did fantastic with this in March, so I thought it would be a great goal to set for April… And then stress hit like a ton of bricks and suddenly, keeping track of every single bite wasn’t as important. For the last few weeks, I’ve been eating more intuitively as opposed to counting every calorie and gram and actually feeling great.

FOUR // Send off the thredUp bag

Grade: F

Didn’t happen. The bag is still sitting in my kitchen chair where it’s been since it arrived.

FIVE // Read. A. Book.

Grade: F

I read one chapter in the pedicure chair one Saturday afternoon. Does that count?! 😉

May Goals

ONE // Run 2x/week and begin to increase my mileage again

This is a repeat from last month, as you can see above. Additionally, I want to complete 100 “miles” of cardio by the first day of summer! I don’t anticipate running every single one of those miles, so I’m counting HIIT towards it as well. 10 minutes of intense cardio = 1 mile

#100bySummer tracker by @amylynnntiu on Instagram

TWO // Leave work most days by 4:15

I had my LAST day of tutorials for the school year yesterday, and hopefully my last day of leaving at 5 p.m. I go off duty at 3:45, so there’s really no reason for me to keep hanging around much longer. 😉

Leaving work at 4:00 on Monday. YES.

THREE // Eat clean 90% of the time

In the next couple of months, I want to clean up my diet quite a bit and work on losing some fat. In the last couple of weeks I’ve had some of the most consistently clean days I can remember having and I’m so proud of myself! When you build up momentum and see little successes, it makes sticking with something a lot easier.

FOUR // Lose 3 pounds

This goes hand-in-hand with goal #3 and is part of a long(er) term goal. Honestly… I know numbers don’t mean that much, but sometimes a particular number on the scale is still nice to see.

FIVE // Catch up on house cleaning

Since I want to be leaving work earlier this month, I want to use that time to get caught up on some house cleaning! I’m not a weekend cleaner. I’d rather do a few small tasks each day than everything all in one day. This week has been successful thus far — I swept the floors on Monday and vacuumed the carpets yesterday. But the true test will be whether or not the dishwasher gets unloaded this afternoon. 😉

April Goals

I realize that it is April 5 (ALREADY?!) and I’m just now getting around to posting my monthly goals. But, better late than never. 🙂 Before we jump into that though, I want to look over the goals I set for March and see how I did.

March Goals

Since I’m a teacher, it seems fitting that I should give myself a grade for each goal. I tend to think of goals in a pass/fail way — I either reached it or I didn’t. But as I’m striving for balance in life and realizing that progress is progress, I’m starting to understand that not all goals should be judged that way!

ONE // Clean out our closet/send off a bag to thredUP

Grade: B-

I cleaned out our closet when I was on Spring Break, but the bag I requested from thredUp has been sitting in a kitchen chair since it arrived two weeks ago. Which also means the closet I intend to send have been sitting in our closet floor for at least that long. Counterproductive, no?

TWO // PR my 10K

Grade: A+

…And not just because it was my first 10K! With a finish time of 1:02:27, that was actually around two minutes faster than I expected to finish. I rode the high from that race for days!

Energy City 10K

THREE // See Beauty & the Beast!

Grade: A

My husband hated it. I want to see it again. 🙂

FOUR // Follow the Tone It Up Nutrition Plan (or at least the guidelines) more consistently

Grade: B

I started tracking my food again within the last couple weeks of the month and saw a lot of improvement in the way I felt during my workouts.

FIVE // Have a restful and relaxing Spring Break

Grade: A

My only regret is that it went by too quickly!

April Goals

ONE // Drink 100 oz. of water daily

I’m realizing more and more that the standard 64 oz.  just doesn’t cut it for me and sometimes I struggle to even get that much in! As a teacher, it can be hard to make sure I’m getting enough water because I just can’t take a restroom break whenever I need one.

TWO // Run 2x/week to keep my running base up between now and half marathon training time

I took a break from running last week after my 10K, and it was hard! By Thursday, I was itching to put my running shoes on. I’m looking forward to running more and just hope my new shoes continue to help with my black toenail issues.

THREE // Track meals in MyFitnessPal at least four days a week

The caveat to this is that I want to do it without becoming obsessive. I certainly see the benefit of tracking, but I’m one of those people who can quickly turn it into an unhealthy habit. I want to strike a happy balance between tracking and eating intuitively.

FOUR // Send off the dang thredUp bag

I literally just have to stuff it in the bag and send it off. C’mon, Jessica, get.it.done.

FIVE // Read. A. Book.

*eyeroll* I set a goal in January to read 12 books this year and so far, I’m failing miserably. I haven’t read one. Last weekend, I bought Anna Kendrick’s autobiography, Scrappy Little Nobody, on a whim in Target. Thus far, I’ve read the introduction. I know I would love it — if I weren’t too exhausted to read each night when I crawled into bed.

It all started with a trip to Target. Doesn’t it always?

Checking In: 2017 Goals & Word of the Year

Here we are! A full two months into the new year. Both January and February have now come and gone. I have just eight days until my spring break begins! Before we know it, summer will be here showing its pretty face. 🙂 Late, late last year and then early this year I talked about my word of the year as well as my goals. I’m so good at making goals and then never thinking about them again, so I want to take the time to reflect on the last nine weeks and see where I’m going from here!

First up, my word of the year: B A L A N C E.

balance

The year 2016 was an awful year for me when it comes to balance. In the latter part of the year, especially, I was stressed out, exhausted, and over-worked. This affected every part of my life in a negative way. Once Christmas break hit, I made a mental plan to practice balance moving forward (and maybe ordered some Clear Mood as well). I’m pretty proud of the way I’ve balanced things so far this year

In Fitness:

Although I’ve been feeling a little uninspired with my strength training lately, my balance efforts have been right on point! I’ve been running three times a week, doing two days of strength training, plus a day of yoga (or pilates or a combination of the two). I love yoga and all the benefits it brings to my other forms of training. I’m so glad I started practicing again! If I could just remind myself to foam roll more than once a year, I’d be in great shape! 😉

In Work:

As far as my work-life balance struggles, I’ve been doing much better. I’ve been working at home less and less and prioritizing things at school better. I started tutoring a couple of weeks ago, so I’m hoping the extra time doesn’t kill my motivation!

In Life:

I mentioned earlier this week that my husband has been traveling for work a lot. That SUCKS, womp womp. But we work very hard to make the most of the time we have together! We cook together and make sure we talk about our days. My husband LOVES The X-Files and goes through phases of bingeing on Netflix. We recently started watching an episode or two a night and it’s fun to giggle about the silliness of an episode, or at the terrible 90’s fashion that burns your eyes through every episode.

Next up, my G O A L S. At the beginning of this year, I set seven goals because I liked how “7 for 2017” sounded! Let’s look over them and see how I’ve done so far.

goals

ONE // Complete the Tone It Up #LookForLove Challenge, start to finish (and follow the meal plan as closely as possible)

This goal is complete! Well, mostly. I didn’t do a great job of following the schedules, but I sure did check in each day! I also didn’t do a great job with my nutrition through a lot of it, but I still lost a few pounds. Read my recaps here, here, and here! I’m now looking forward to the annual Tone It Up Bikini Series starting soon. 🙂

TWO // Blog at least two times a week

So far, so good! I have, in fact, blogged at least three times each week. We’ll see how well I can keep this up for the rest of the year.

THREE // Read 12 Books

I’m pretty behind on this goal. I started Red Queen and haven’t gotten more than four chapters in. I’m so zonked by the end of the day, I have no energy to read. One of my students is badgering me to read Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing, so maybe I can make it through a kid’s book. 😉

FOUR // Complete a runDisney race

This goal won’t be completed until November, but I’m already falling into the Disney rabbit hole! I have a race this month for which I’ll submit proof of time. My husband and I are finalizing our trip details so we can book by April. I’m pinning anything and everything runDisney/adult Disney trip. I just.can’t.wait.!!

FIVE // Close my old 401K

I’m making strides with this one. I’m just waiting on the paperwork from my old job so I can get the ball rolling.

SIX // Start running again

Done! I have been running three days each week since the beginning of the year. I’m doing my first race of the year this Saturday and have a 10K on the 25th. Since I’m running Wine & Dine in November, I anticipate I’ll be running regularly through all of 2017.

SEVEN // Finish putting our house together

This is also done! I still have a few organizational projects I want to tackle, like cleaning out our closets, but our house is done. We have things hung on the walls and everything has its place now. I love making our house a home!

There’s something truly accountable about writing down your goals and putting them out into the world. I want to set a few G O A L S for the month of March and check back in at the beginning of April!

March Goals

ONE // Clean out our closet/send off a bag to thredUP

I’ve never done this before, but I’m sure to have at least as much luck as I have with Plato’s closet!

TWO // PR my 10K

Does it count that I’ve never run a 10K race before? 😉

THREE // See Beauty & the Beast!

I will be on Spring Break on the 17th when it comes out. I’ll go to the theater by myself if I must.

FOUR // Follow the Tone It Up Nutrition Plan (or at least the guidelines) more consistently

I’ll try. I need to get better about my nutrition and tracking my food, regardless. I need to stop munching on candy throughout the day, so that will be my main focus!

FIVE // Have a restful and relaxing Spring Break

No work! No lesson plans! No grading! Ok, I’ll probably have to bend on that last one, but I’m going to put my work-life balance efforts into practice and focus on self-care for the ten days I’m out!

I’m linking up with some of my favorites, Nicole, Annemarie, and Jen, for Wild Workout Wednesday!

Your turn. What goals are you setting for the month of March?
